    Organizing Ourselves: Drywallers\u27 Strike Holds Lessons for the Future of Labor Organizing

    [Excerpt] In October 1991, drywall hanger Jesus Gomez complained to the drywall contractor for whom he worked that his check was short $60 for the week. The contractor refused to pay up the difference — and he felt safe doing so. He\u27d conducted business this way for years and his predatory attitude told him these drywallers, (poor, immigrant, Mexican, often undocumented, and without a union to defend their interests,) were in no position to challenge the status quo. Besides, the economic recession and construction slump provided added insurance against worker discontent. Unfortunately for drywall contractors, Gomez was more than discontented. He was determined to do something about this state of affairs. Gomez began to speak with other drywallers at their homes and at worksites throughout southern California, slowly fashioning the complaints and frustration into collective strength and a plan of action.     El presente trabajo muestra los resultados de una experiencia de indagación e investigación en el área de ciencias. Es una propuesta metodológica basada en la utilización del método científico a través de los proyectos de trabajo en la etapa de infantil. En concreto, a través del proyecto de trabajo «de las semillas a las flores» pretendemos mostrar cómo evoluciona la construcción del conocimiento en aprendices de cuatro años fomentando el acercamiento de nuestro entorno y de los elementos que lo integran. A través de la manipulación de una semilla cercana a ellos, la aceituna, se han establecido relaciones causa- efecto verbalizado las consecuencias de las acciones sobre las semillas y los frutos además de la valoración y respeto hacia el entorno. Mostramos como los alumnos son capaces a estas edades de seguir una metodología científica de investigación

    Rapid Prediction of Nutrient Concentration in Citrus Leaves Using Vis-NIR Spectroscopy

    [EN] The nutritional diagnosis of crops is carried out through costly foliar ionomic analysis in laboratories. However, spectroscopy is a sensing technique that could replace these destructive analyses for monitoring nutritional status. This work aimed to develop a calibration model to predict the foliar concentrations of macro and micronutrients in citrus plantations based on rapid non-destructive spectral measurements. To this end, 592 'Clementina de Nules' citrus leaves were collected during several months of growth. In these foliar samples, the spectral absorbance (430-1040 nm) was measured using a portable spectrometer, and the foliar ionomics was determined by emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for macro and micronutrients, and the Kjeldahl method to quantify N. Models based on partial least squares regression (PLS-R) were calibrated to predict the content of macro and micronutrients in the leaves. The determination coefficients obtained in the model test were between 0.31 and 0.69, the highest values being found for P, K, and B (0.60, 0.63, and 0.69, respectively). Furthermore, the important P, K, and B wavelengths were evaluated using the weighted regression coefficients (BW) obtained from the PLS-R model. The results showed that the selected wavelengths were all in the visible region (430-750 nm) related to foliage pigments. For this purpose, we obtained control laws and laws of adaptive weights online, obtained using the Lyapunov stability analysis methodology of fractional order.     Engineering repressors with coevolutionary cues facilitates toggle switches with a master reset

    Engineering allosteric transcriptional repressors containing an environmental sensing module (ESM) and a DNA recognition module (DRM) has the potential to unlock a combinatorial set of rationally designed biological responses. We demonstrated that constructing hybrid repressors by fusing distinct ESMs and DRMs provides a means to flexibly rewire genetic networks for complex signal processing. We have used coevolutionary traits among LacI homologs to develop a model for predicting compatibility between ESMs and DRMs. Our predictions accurately agree with the performance of 40 engineered repressors. We have harnessed this framework to develop a system of multiple toggle switches with a master OFF signal that produces a unique behavior: each engineered biological activity is switched to a stable ON state by different chemicals and returned to OFF in response to a common signal. One promising application of this design is to develop living diagnostics for monitoring multiple parameters in complex physiological environments and it represents one of many circuit topologies that can be explored with modular repressors designed with coevolutionary information

    Body composition in breast cancer survivors in Sonorenses women

    INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the worldwide. In the same sense, this disease is one of the most common cancers affecting Mexican women. In the year 2014 in México, there were 11,372 new cases of breast cancer with an incidence rate of 22.56 per 100,000 in habitants older than 10 years. Women with breast cancer are often subjected to an operation due to this affectation which decreases its functionality and body composition. PURPOSE: To examine the body composition in breast cancer survivors in a sample of women from Hermosillo, Sonora, México. METHODS: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study design. 21 women with breast cancer who had been operated on left arm and had been recruited at one university-based exercise program for breast cancer survivors in Hermosillo, Sonora, México. Body composition (BC) was measured. The right arm non-operated was considered as control. Statistical difference between the operated versus non-operated arm were determined with t-student test for independent samples. RESULTS: In the present study, body fat (1719.1 ± 456.7 vs. 1819.8 ± 467.9 grams, p ≤ 0.05), lean mass (1960.2 ± 308.7 vs. 2151.5 ± 313.5 grams, p ≤ 0.05) and total body mass (3679.3 ± 643.3 vs. 3971.1 ± 675.9 grams, p ≤ 0.05) of the left operated arm of women who breast cancer survivors were significantly lower than the mean of the right non-operated arm. CONCLUSION: Breast cancer survivors’ women who have underwent an operation on their left arm sowed a lower percentage of fat, fat mass and total mass compared to their non-operate arm. The present study underline the importance to apply rehabilitation or exercise program focused to reduce the changes in the body composition

    The GALEX Ultraviolet Atlas of Nearby Galaxies

    We present images, integrated photometry, surface-brightness and color profiles for a total of 1034 nearby galaxies recently observed by the GALEX satellite in its far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1516A) and near-ultraviolet (NUV; 2267A) bands. (...) This data set has been complemented with archival optical, near-infrared, and far-infrared fluxes and colors. We find that the integrated (FUV-K) color provides robust discrimination between elliptical and spiral/irregular galaxies and also among spiral galaxies of different sub-types. Elliptical galaxies with brighter K-band luminosities (i.e. more massive) are redder in (NUV-K) color but bluer in (FUV-NUV) than less massive ellipticals. In the case of the spiral/irregular galaxies our analysis shows the presence of a relatively tight correlation between the (FUV-NUV) color and the total infrared-to-UV ratio. The correlation found between (FUV-NUV) color and K-band luminosity (with lower luminosity objects being bluer than more luminous ones) can be explained as due to an increase in the dust content with galaxy luminosity.     Protection efficacy of Argentinian isolates of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis with different genotypes and virulence in a murine model

    Paratuberculosis is a chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map). The disease causes economic losses and, therefore, it is imperative to follow proper control strategies, which should include an effective vaccine. Several strategies have assessed the virulence and immune response of Map strains that could be used as a vaccine. This study evaluates the degree of virulence, immune response, and protection of Argentinian strains of Map with different genotype in a murine model. Four local isolates (Cattle type) with different genotypes (analyzed by MIRU-VNTR and SSRs) were selected and evaluated in a virulence assay in BALB/c mice. This assay allowed us to differentiate virulent and low-virulence Map strains. The less virulent strains (1543/481 and A162) failed to induce a significant production of the proinflammatory cytokine IFNg, whereas the virulent strain 6611 established infection along with a proinflammatory immune response. On the other hand, the virulent strain 1347/498 was efficient in establishing a persistent infection, but failed to promote an important Th1 response compared with 6611 at the evaluated time. We selected the low-virulence strain 1543/498 as a live vaccine and the virulent strain 6611 as a live and inactivated vaccine in a protection assay in mice. Strain 1543/481 failed to protect the animals from challenge, whereas strain 6611, in its live and inactivated form, significantly reduced the CFUs count in the infected mice, although they had different immunological response profiles. The inactivated virulent strain 6611 is a potential vaccine candidate against paratuberculosis to be tested in cattle.Fil: Colombatti Olivieri, María Alejandra.     Lesson study as a way of reconstructing practical knowledge for improved teaching practice. Seven case studies.

    With the aim of helping to enrich teacher training processes, using an approach based on Practical Knowledge and Practical Thinking (Schön's knowledge-in-action), the present paper strives to explore and understand the relationships between espoused theories and theories-in-use (action theories by Argyris) of a group of seven pre-school teachers involved in a process of in-service training based on Lesson Study, a powerful methodological tool to identify, contrast and review such theories both autonomously and cooperatively. The conclusion reached is that this training strategy is a rich proposal for the questioning of teaching theory and practice, and, in consequence, for the reconstruction of more unconscious Practical Knowledge, albeit with some circumstantial and personal nuances.Universidad de Málaga.
